Noida-Greater Noida To Get Second Expressway: Plan Approved For Traffic Decongestion
Two Expressway Models Under Consideration
Authorities are evaluating two options for the new expressway, an eight-lane surface road or a six-lane elevated corridor. The proposed alignment runs along the Yamuna River's embankments from Okhla Barrage near Kalindi Kunj to the Yamuna Expressway.
Alternative Route to Bypass Noida Expressway
With growing residential, commercial, and industrial developments along the Noida Expressway, an alternative traffic route is essential. The expressway currently experiences congestion throughout the day, raising concerns that it could face similar traffic bottlenecks as the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. The new corridor is expected to improve connectivity while reducing travel time for commuters.
NHAI Involvement and SPV Proposal
The Noida Authority is keen on involving the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to execute the project, which would require classifying the road as a national highway. However, if NHAI does not take up the project, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) could be formed with Noida, Greater Noida, and Yamuna Expressway authorities overseeing construction.
Route and Connectivity Features
The proposed expressway will extend from Okhla Barrage to the Yamuna Expressway via the Hindon-Yamuna doab. It will integrate existing road infrastructure along the Yamuna marginal bund, currently under the irrigation department’s jurisdiction. A four-lane stretch already exists between Okhla Barrage and the irrigation drain, running parallel to key sectors like 94 and 124-135. Another 14km stretch follows sectors 150, 160, 162, 164, 165, and 167.
The project requires strategic planning for interchanges, underpasses, and connectivity points. Sector 168 has been identified as a key interchange point linking the new expressway with the Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad (FNG) Expressway. Another major link is expected at Sector 150, connecting the new road with the main highway between Sectors 149A and 150.
DPR and Feasibility Study to Finalise Road Type
A comprehensive traffic survey and feasibility study will be conducted before finalising whether the new expressway will be a surface or elevated road. Noida Authority will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) to determine the most viable construction model.
The concept of a Noida expressway bypass was first proposed in November 2023, but NHAI had initially declined to take on the project. However, with rising traffic demands and large-scale developments in the region, the plan has gained renewed urgency. The second expressway is expected to significantly improve traffic flow between Noida and Greater Noida, ensuring smoother and faster connectivity.
